The journey began in Jacksonville, NC, with friends and fellow veterans Tony Shaw and Derrick Fox. Drawn to a basic game created by Derrick’s older brother, Fox, and a childhood friend, Bobby Foster, they recognized its potential. The game was simple yet addictive, a perfect blend of strategy and luck. But Tony and Derrick saw an opportunity to take it to the next level.
Building the Flames
The acquisition of the original game was not without obstacles. An unexpected hiccup during the process brought things to a standstill. It was a potentially devastating moment, but from uncertainty, the “Unlucky” card concept emerged, soon to be known as the “Undead” card. This brilliant lightbulb moment breathed new life into the game, giving it a unique twist and an identity of its own.
The team expanded to include Kaylee Shaw, Tony’s daughter, an undisputed Skorch Queen, and an invaluable contributor. Her deep understanding of the game’s strategy and her winning record made her the perfect fit to document the game’s development, providing critical feedback along the way.
The OGs: Our Foundations
Skorch is more than a game; it’s a bond that brought together a close-knit group known as the OGs. Consisting of Tony and Derrick’s friends and family members – Natasha Caro, James Kammerer, Ethan Hanscom, and Baylan Hanscom – the OGs played an essential role in play testing the game.
Though they had no influence or rights over the design or rules of Skorch, their involvement was crucial in fine-tuning the gameplay mechanics. Their consistent presence, coupled with their willingness to engage in hours of daily play, provided invaluable feedback that shaped the game’s development.
The OGs were more than mere play testers; they were the lifeblood of early Skorch sessions, providing encouragement, camaraderie, and constructive critique. Together with Tony and Derrick, they cultivated an environment where Skorch could flourish, allowing it to grow into the engaging and addictive game it is today.
Their close relationship with the creators did not translate into ownership or creative control, but their love for the game and their role in its early evolution will forever be a cherished part of Skorch’s history.
Design Evolution
The original dark-colored design proved to be too distracting, with slippery plastic cards that were hard to read. After thoughtful reflection, a minimalistic design was born in 2022, enhancing gameplay by removing distractions and providing clear, player-friendly instructions on each special card.
Community Growth
Skorch’s flame spread like wildfire through various communities, reaching even beyond local gatherings to connect with those deployed abroad. From conferences to church gatherings, the game found its way into the hands of passionate players who took it back to their friends and families. Derrick’s time in Southeast Asia with fellow Marines was filled with eager requests for Skorch games, even interrupting his naps for a chance to play. The game became a weekly ritual for groups, and the creators were often pleasantly surprised to stumble upon avid Skorch players in unexpected places. United across different cultures and continents, Skorch has created a passionate community of players who embrace the game wholeheartedly.
Business and Future Vision
With a vision to ignite the gaming world, the decision to launch Skorch on Kickstarter became the catalyst for expansion. Plans were laid for hosting tournaments, engaging with players through social media, and fostering a community around the game.
