Master the Face-off: Unleashing the Power of the Most Versatile Skorch Card

In the heat of a SKORCH battle, the Face-off card is your greatest asset and your biggest liability. It is the only card that lets you reach into the mystery of your Prison, but it forces you to show your hand to the entire table.

The Mechanics of the Reach

When you play a Face-off, you aren’t just playing a card; you’re scouting. You flip any two face-down cards from your table.

  • The Reward: You get two chances to beat the current discard pile. If you’re hunting for a save, this is your best bet.
  • The Penalty: If both cards fail to beat the pile, you pick up the discard pile.
  • The Catch: The card you don’t play stays face-up. It is now vulnerable. Even if it’s in your back row, the Undead can now reach in and snatch it.

Strategic Timing: When to Strike

1. The Low-Pile Probe The best time to use a Face-off is when the discard pile is low (under a 5). Why? Because it minimizes your risk. You almost certainly won’t have to pick up the discard pile, and you get to “unlock” the mystery of your back row early. Knowing where your Skorch cards are hidden lets you plan your endgame.

2. The Desperation Save When the pile is high and the Face-off is the last card in your hand, you have no choice. You are diving into your Prison hoping for a miracle.

3. The End-Game Trap If you have no cards left in your Prison, the Face-off acts like a “Mirror” card. It’s a safe play to exit the game. But if you still have cards on the table, be careful. Using it as a “victory lap” just reveals your remaining cards to opponents who have Undead cards waiting to screw up your finish.

The Real “Worst-Case” Scenario

The worst-case isn’t picking up the pile… it’s forced exposure.

Imagine the discard pile is a 3. Easy to beat. You play your Face-off and flip over a Shield and a Skorch card.

  • The Choice: Both cards beat the 3. Both are incredibly powerful.
  • The Outcome: You play the Shield to reverse the turn order. You’re safe for now.
  • The Disaster: Your Skorch card… your best defensive weapon… is now sitting face-up in your back row. Because you revealed it, the next player uses an Undead card to swap their 1 for your Skorch.

You didn’t just lose a good card; you got “Buried.” You now have a 1 stuck in your back row that you eventually have to deal with, while your opponent just got a free “Burn” for the discard pile.

Face-off vs. Undead: The Final Turn

Understanding how these cards behave when they are your last card is vital:

  • The Undead Penalty: If the Undead is your last card, it can actually prevent you from winning. You must take an opponent’s card. If they have a “1” in their prison, and that’s the only prison card on the table, you have to take it. You aren’t out of the game… you’re back in the prison.
  • The Face-off Grace: If your prison is empty and you play the Face-off as your last card, you win. It doesn’t force you to take new cards unless you fail to beat the pile.
